Book of Hoeth vs Ring of Hotek

You get the drift.

Book of Hoeth vs Ring of Hotek

Postby MantisZero on Wed Aug 20, 2008 2:20 am

Alright, so what happens when a wizard with the Book of Hoeth rolls a double when casting a spell vs a Dark Elf player who has the Ring of Hotek?

Spell goes off then you miscast.

Miscast always overrides irresistible force, so the spell would fail, and you role on the table. No different then rolling 2 sixes and 2 ones.

Ludwig, this was FAQ'd last edition. I think they rule it is an IF cast but you miscast immediately after the spell resolves.

Lol. So a 25 point item completely trumps a 100 pt book of hoeth. AWESOME!

I agree with Ludwig.

What's the range on the ring? 12 inch radius? 6 inch radius? If it's just 6 inches, you can often just walk away from it. If it's 12 inches... well... it's GW, so whatever.

It's 12". Any spell cast within 12", or targetted at a unit within 12" of the ring bearer.

That's totally F'ed. Seriously.

So, is that one of those auto-comp-hit items? We should make a list for tournament use.

If your one of those people who give auto comp hits, yes the ring is most definatly one of them. Every freaking DE army you are gonna face is going to have one.

Well not every list will have the ring. A list using a lot of magic might not use the ring, but that’s about it. And if they’re using a lot a magic then you’ve got a whole other reason to give em a comp hit ;)

I don't mind the level 4 with dagger, level 2 combo. That's fine. I don't mind the reverse ward, when it's not combined with a 1+ save and thrown on top of a flying rank-breaker. But pretty much shutting down magic on a third of the table is quite harsh!

You can certainly take the ring in a magic-heavy list... you can move the guy carrying it towards the enemy mages and keep your own in the back supporting your army. You can also use itto stop them, and put your own mages a bit further away, and use the focus familiar to give your stay-in-the-back mage extra range.

It doesn't shut down magic, it just makes it more dangerous to use big nasty spells. Remember, on 2 dice, you're still 5/6 likely to NOT miscast.

you know what drives me nuts about that stupid ring (now having played against it 2x). I dont care that it cripples magic phases, if your magic heavy or run a tzneetch dl you deserve it. It FN kills me that it more or less doesnt effect VC! what the fuck, they can throw 1 die and spam IoN all day. Not to mention that IoN is immune from the banner of sundering as well. I swear there is some consipracy to make VC the most broken army in the game...

Can you really call it a conspiracy when it's already a fact?
