I've been a Star Trek fan my whole life. My dad pretty much forced me to be a fan when I was a kid. So I'm used to the old Trek. It was really good for a while, but for years now ST has been just terrible. The last few movies were mediocre (Fist Contact was really good), Enterprise was a horrible show, Voyager was good for about 1 season, same with DS9.
As far as I was concerned ST was dead, it had its day but had been ruined by corporations pandering to what they thought fans wanted, even as ratings tanked.
That in mind, this movie was AWESOME. This is everything the ST franchise needed to be good again. With the time travel plot they effectively destroyed the entire original trek universe, all of it, and built a new one that keeps the spirit of the series. The casting and acting was spot on, with all the characters being a little over the top and campy, as ST was with the original cast.
The only complaint I have, and this is minor, is that this movie ditched some of the seriousness of the original, the philisophical stuff. It was kind of big budget actiony, which is not a bad thing, just different. I guess they had a lot of ground to cover to reboot the whole thing so adding some of the serious element would have been overdone it. It made up ground though with some major heroic stuff going on.
Final conclusion: Go see it, its awesome. Even if you don't like Trek, or don't know anything, its a complete restart to the series so going in blind isn't a bad thing.
